About us

The Imaging Centre was established in 1991 by Bob Short and his wife Jan and joined by Katie who has worked with Bob for more than 23 years. The company started out supplying digital files to the printing industry. Changes in technology meant a change in direction and in 2003 the company purchased one of the first Indigo digital printing presses and was introduced to the Greeting Card Industry.

Over the past few years the company has grown to employ 20 members of staff over five departments including Bob and Jan's son Adam and daughter Jessica who head up the Sales and Production sides of the business respectively.
Now The Imaging Centre is one of the leading digital print distributers in the UK for the Greeting Card Industry with two top of the range Indigo digital presses catering for both long and short print runs. We now supply cards not only to the UK but send them all over the world including as far away as Australia, New Zealand and The Falkland Islands.

Further investment in finishing equipment has helped us to improve our offering of special techniques such as foiling, die cutting and embossing. We have installed white ink onto our press which enables us to offer a wider range of substrates to our customers, and working with another specialist finisher we are able to offer short run ‘flittering’ as an additional special finish option.

In 2014 we installed an automatic wrapping line. Whilst we have always offered a packing service through hand finishing the Wrapping Line is able to pack up to 4000 cards an hour. For our customers this means that we can now print, finish and pack cards all within a contained unit with quicker turnaround times. Perhaps more importantly it also makes packed orders more cost effective, The Imaging Centre can now print, finish and pack your cards from as little as 19p per card.

Although we are by no means the only digital printer in the UK we were the first to harness this new technology for the greeting card industry. In the last few years hundreds of aspirational publishers, who previously would not have had the finance to bring their cards to market because of the cost of traditional litho print runs, have found that it does not cost a small fortune to dip a toe into the greeting card market. So whether you're looking for your first samples to be produced or a print run of 1000's The Imaging Centre should be your first point of call.

Through word of mouth our reputation and business has grown and we now have over 2000 customers.

Greeting Cards make up a large percentage of our business but we can print anything... Leaflets, Postcards, Catalogues, Calendars, Books, Business Cards, the list is endless and if you're unsure then just ask.
Our values are simple – to provide the best customer service possible whilst producing the best quality product. We like to think that we are here for our customers from their very first thought right through to seeing the finished product, giving as much help and assistance as they need along the way.
If you would like to find out more about us or our products give us a call or pop in and see us at our offices.

Meet the team

Bob Short

After spending twenty years at Kodak dealing with all aspects of traditional imaging, I started my own business in digital imaging before moving into digital printing.
It soon became clear that there was a gap in the market to produce 'short run' greeting cards and so The Imaging Centre was born.

Bob Short

I deal with the accounts. I'm the one that hassles you for money to make sure the invoices are paid on time.
Being married to Bob I have been with the business from the start. It is good to be settled into the new premises and see the business going forward.

Bob Short

With Jan and Bob as my parents a career in print was always "on the cards”! After leaving school I realised that a career in sales was the route for me to go and quickly pursued it; starting in retail management. I went on to settle on a role in Print Advertising with the Northcliffe Media Group where I worked for 8 years. In 2011 as a passionate football fan I took on a role as sales manager at Gillingham Football Club, then in 2012 having been bought up around The Imaging Centre, I thought the experience I had built up could help to continue growing the business.
Working in the greeting card industry is a real pleasure, the people we deal with are great and all seem to have similar values to us. I love attending the Trade Shows to meet customers and see their finished products. No two days at The Imaging Centre are the same and the best part of my job is watching all of our customers ideas come to life!

Bob Short

As Bob and Jan's daughter I have worked at The Imaging Centre for the past 12 years. I started by helping to pack cards around the dining room table, hand finishing calendars and pick and packing card orders in half term all for a little bit of pocket money.  I gradually developed with the business by running Quality Control and Despatch and gaining some knowledge and experience in Finishing.  At this point working for Mum and Dad was my day job alongside gaining my Teaching and Exercise to Music qualifications which led to teaching Dance and Exercise classes freelance around East Sussex.
After 8 years of doing this I started a family, and gave birth to Billy, (Bob and Jan's first Grandchild).
Now I focus all my work as Production Manager heading up the Finishing and Despatch departments and instead of dancing in my free time I enjoy quality time with my family.

Bob Short

I have worked with Bob and Jan for over 20 years in varying roles; from Prepress to Printing and Finishing through to overseeing Production and also Customer Services. Over the past few years Bob and Jan’s son Adam and one of their daughters Jessica have joined the company. Their contributions have meant that even though The Imaging Centre has grown it will continue to be a family run business.
I enjoy the fact that every day is different and am looking forward to my new role which involves using new technology to help the business develop in the future.

Kate Brooke, Grossmith Ltd

“What did I like? Well aside from the fab lunch, champagne reception, silver ticket and post show drinks - I love what the Imaging Centre & GF Smith offer to the show - both in what they put on in the Springboard Lounge - but also the creativity they offer through their processes and product. The greetings card industry would be a lot more bland without the behind the scenes work these two companies do in enabling short runs, exceptional board/envelopes and great advice to the up and coming card designser! And such great people too!”
